Characters:
Jay: He is fifteen "and a half" years old. Sometimes naive and struggling to define himself as “the man of the family”, the death of his mother forces him to be more mature than he is ready to be when his father leaves him and his younger brother with Grandma Kurnitz.
Arty: Jay's younger brother (13 ½), who is more carefree and spirited. More of an observer than the rest of his family, he often goes with the flow of things, and exhibits a youthful innocence.
Bella: Jay and Arty’s aunt, late 30's to early 40's. Sweet but has lived a sheltered life, she is loving and protective of her nephews. She longs for love and independence, attempting to find acceptance and autonomy by escaping from under her mother’s tight reigns.
Louie: The loud and somewhat shady uncle. In his late 30s, he comes to live with the family while he lays low following a crime. He has a tough exterior, but has a soft side for his nephews. He is a tough and somewhat hardened character, involved in the world of petty crime. Contrasts the harsh realities of life with comedic moments.
Grandma Kurnitz: The grandmother. A very old and stern woman, an immigrant from Germany. She rules the home with an iron fist, but her tough exterior hides a painful past. Her relationships with her family are often strained due to her blunt nature and harsh comments.
Eddie: Jay and Arty’s father. After the loss of his wife, he desperately turns to his mother, seeking a home for his boys while he turns to his employment as a traveling salesman to make ends meet and repay his debts..
Gert: Jay and Arty’s aunt. Gert deals with a breathing issue due to the fear her mother instilled in her from a very young age. She serves as a referee in family discussions. She highlights the contrast of the humor in the family's eccentricity and its tension.
